The started the morning with exercise. We listened to Halloween music while we threw the ball to each other. We also played a game where we named everything we could think of with Halloween. After that, the residents watched It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. The kids from Primrose School came in for a Halloween parade. They loved seeing them in their costumes and they were all so cute!
It was the Halloween party this afternoon! There was great music, Beach Comber Bob, and food! It was sweets galore! Their haunted gingerbread house was on display and everyone loved it! There were also so many other decorations to look at. Everyone danced in their seats and enjoyed the great oldies music! They especially liked when he dressed like Elvis and came up to some of the residents! Several residents took pictures at our Halloween photo booth. Take a look at facebook soon for pictures! What a fabulous time!
Today, a small group of residents worked on a haunted gingerbread house that will be displayed at the Halloween party tomorrow! It was a lot of fun to make and it looked fantastic!
We did some Halloween activities this morning. We started with Halloween history and trivia and learned all about how Halloween and its traditions started. Here are a couple interesting facts, 90% of parents admit to taking candy from their children’s trick-or-treat bags and there is $2 billion spent on candy! The residents thought it was interesting and they were flabbergasted with some of the trivia and numbers. We reminisced about their past Halloween parties, trick or treating with their kids, and when they passed candy out to children. One resident said that she dressed up as a witch and she put a skeleton outside her house and put lights around it. She said it didn’t scare the older kids but maybe the younger ones! After, I put on Halloween music and we threw the ball to each other to get in some morning exercises. Then we watched some cute and funny Halloween videos of kids and dogs. They were so adorable! This afternoon, we played BINGO! Several residents came down for a few games. It was a great time and a great day!
The morning began with The Daily Chronicle. We learned all sorts of things like, on October 24, 1897, the first regular comic strip, “The Yellow Kid” was published in The New York Journal and on October 26, 1861, The Pony Express ended after only 19 months when the first transcontinental telegraph was invented. It would have been Johnny Carson’s birthday on the 23rd! One of his humorous quotes was, “Anytime four New Yorkers get into a cab together without arguing, a bank robbery has just taken place.” Later, we watched some segments from The Tonight Show. He was the best! Next, we stretching and loosening up from head to toes. That got us ready for the balloon volleyball game!
It was the October birthday party today! What a fantastic time as always! There was good music that everyone enjoyed singing along to and dancing to! They really enjoyed the cake too! When we were back from the party, we listened to James play the piano. He played many beautiful, classical songs with some upbeat songs as well. The residents absolutely loved it!
This morning, we did a fun Halloween hijinks mad lib game. They came up with some great words to put into their story. It was hilarious! Here’s an example from the story: “…The next year, it was all about the mailboxes. They were happily shut with duct tape.” Another one…”They blamed the residents of the nearby Rascals retirement community, saying that even though they were older the still knew how to have fun.” Did we ever have a good laugh with that story! After that, we did some stretching. Then we exercised more with playing catch and tossing the soft baseballs back and forth. It was a great time! Next, we watched YouTube videos of babies in funny costumes. There was a lot of “look at that, and oohh cute.”
This afternoon, the residents played Halloween BINGO! There were Halloween pictures they had to look for on each of their cards. We used candy for markers today and one resident kept eating them all up! She just laughed and thought it was so funny! It was fun to do something different and they had a good time! After the games, we had Music Safari! Jennifer played a lot of Halloween music while they played instruments. She played a hot potato pumpkin game where she tossed a stuffed pumpkin to everyone while singing a song. Jennifer also read a book and told them some skeleton trivia. It was a fun time!
Happy Wednesday! We started our day with Worship Services. Pastor George was here today. He graced us all with a look on how far Americans and the rest of the world have come in the past 100 years. It was very reflective and positive. After services, some residents went to the chapel and prayed the Rosary. Next was Exercise, where we did a few stretches and gently flexed to some classical music. After our stretches we read some stories about the wonder of dogs. The stories were of dogs doing heroic feats, such as, saving a blind man from one of the Twin Towers on 9/11 and even a dog that saved its master from a bear. The residents really enjoyed them. After lunch we indulged in a tea party, complete with cookies. Some ladies thought they looked like cigars- I snapped a photo of the two doing their best Grocho Marx impersonation! WE also had a visit from Simon the dog. Enjoy the photos…
This morning, we started with some funny Halloween riddles. The residents enjoyed it and thought they were funny! Everyone had a good morning laugh! They liked them all but here are a couple of the riddles: “Why do ghosts have so much trouble dating? Women can see right through them” and “Why do witches wear nametags? So they would know which witch is which!” Another Halloween joke was, “Why is the scarecrow the most funniest comedian around? They can always tickle you with their straw if you don’t laugh at their jokes.” After that, we did stretches and listened to polka music while we did the ball toss. They had such a fun time, there was more laughter and smiles the majority of the time! We also watched some cute videos on YouTube of dogs in their Halloween costumes!
Jim Roth came in to play the keyboard today. Basically every song he played, they knew and they sang right along with him. Many had a good time dancing and moving in their chairs. What a great time! When the music was done, we played Halloween hangman! One resident guessed them all right after only a few letters!
The morning began with all of us singing “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee” and “Praise the Lord! Ye Heaven’s Adore Him” all together. It is such a great way to start the day with uplifting music! We of course had to do our tradition of joyfully calling out Amen together at the end! Next, we all did stretches. It feel good especially after the weekend! They also played the bean bag toss game. Much of the time, I held a bowl up and they had to try to make it in from different distances and even a moving target! It was fun and we had some good laughs, but after a while we had enough of that. We watched a few songs from The Sound of Music which we never get tired of. Everyone just loves it!
This afternoon a few residents baked applesauce spice cupcakes. Anything apple is good, especially around this time of year! They were very tasty! Diane and Tolstoy came in to visit all of us. Tolstoy is so cute and funny! He worked on his jumping and going through the tunnel today. When Diane said to jump, he went right through the tunnel instead or right around it! Everyone thought it was the funniest thing! He is quite the character! It was a super time! Tolstoy even loved the cupcake they baked!
Happy Saturday from the Willows! Our day started with some very funny stories I read from the October Reminisce magazine. All of the stories were true- and as one of our residents pointed out, “Sometimes truth is truly stranger than fiction!”. One of the tales was that of a couple on their Honeymoon staying in a cabin in the woods and the roof leaked all night- very funny! Next, Stretch and Flex. I added in some seated Yoga stretches and while explaining one pose- cat- a resident meowed! Defiantly a great visual for a great back stretch! Trivia and Finish that Lyric were next- and many residents were quick on finishing with the correct answer. After lunch we played BINGO and enjoyed the garden. I’ll be posting photos tomorrow- quite the busy day!
Happy Friday! Our day started with The Daily Chronicle. We learned what happened in history and found out who’s birthday it was and topped it off with humor of the day from Mickey Mantle. He said, “You don’t realize how easy this game is until you get up in that broadcasting booth.” They thought that was pretty funny. We continued on with exercise by doing stretches. Next, we all had a fun category ball game where another resident or I named a category and everyone had to answer. One of the residents came up with her own topic, wild animals, and another resident answered, “our husbands!” Everyone just burst out laughing, it was way too funny! After the game, someone requested to watch waltz dancing videos. Everybody enjoyed the dancing, the outfits, and the music and thought it was “beautiful.”
After lunch, a few residents went out on a fall leaves drive to Red Wing. We were a little late but we saw some beautiful trees. It was great to get out and see the scenery! When we got back, we did a short beach ball volleyball game while listening to polka music that they absolutely love!
Have a great weekend!
